Oh I don’t think I have ever been so embarrassed to wear my dog collar as I am at the moment. People keep asking me about what the church is doing about Women Bishops and Gay Marriage. I thought the Church of England was very embarrassing about the former but the latter has taken the biscuit.
With the Women Bishops the church did this:
- argued about it for 20 years
- came up with a compromise
- voted for it over the period of a year in the 44 Diocesan Synods and accepted it in 42/44
- rejected it at General Synod
But with the Gay Marriage issue, what happened was the church:
- argued with the government that it was a bad idea
- issued a statement that marriage is about complementarity (since when – and what about love???)
- then the government locked the Church of England out of being able to do Gay Marriages
- so we are hearing that the Bishop of Leicester is complaining that this might make us took like we aren’t gay-friendly.
Huh?
It would be really nice if the people in HQ would stop making us all look like total idiots. Please? Some of us at the coal face are really wanting to improve the relationship between the church and the wider society, which isn’t easy when we look like utter muppets.
